Playroom at the HSE National Drug Treatment Centre

The ethos of the children’s playroom is to provide stimulation, safe and supportive child centred setting for children who accompany their parents/guardians to the clinic.

The staff facilitates the children to express themselves in a happy structured environment.

Emphasis is placed on building children’s self esteem by encouraging them and praising their efforts. The playroom staff also offer a wide range of advice and support to parents who may have childcare concerns.

In the playroom, we cater for children between 1 and 14 years. Types of play provided include Physical, Creative and Imaginative. Other activities include structured play, story time and language work activities based on particular themes.

The children’s playroom is designed to motivate the children to develop and widen their individual mental and social capabilities. The present service is here to help the children have a better quality visit to the clinic and to establish, maintain and encourage open and honest discussions between staff and parents to ensure the needs of each child and the family are fully met in the most practical manner possible.
